Matosavank Monastery
Matosavank is a small, 13th-century medieval monastery hidden deep within the forest thickets of Dilijan National Park.
Ambiance: It is one of the most mysterious and atmospheric sites in the region. The monastery is in a semi-ruined state, almost entirely draped in soft green moss. This creates a mystical, fairytale-like feeling and a sense of profound antiquity.
What to see: The complex consists of a small church, a narthex (gavit), and a library. Inside, the walls are adorned with intricate carvings and ancient Armenian khachkars (cross-stones) that have been remarkably preserved to this day.
The Experience: A scenic forest trail leads the way to Matosavank. Free from crowds of tourists, the monastery is always enveloped in absolute peace and quiet, allowing visitors to feel a deep connection with both history and nature.
The Secret: Tucked away behind a curtain of trees, it is easy to miss. However, those who do find it often call Matosavank the most "alive" and soulful abandoned monument in all of Armenia.
